Biography

Judith Blakely Morgan is a widely-published journalist and author, based in California. Her weekly travel column, launched as "Her World" in the Los Angeles Times (1974-1992) roams to all continents and was syndicated to about 200 newspapers in the U.S. and abroad through Copley News Service (1994-2005). The column , a personal, passionate and often humorous essay on the joys and rigors of travel, has won numerous awards from the Society of American Travel Writers, San Diego Press Club and California Press Association.

As a biographer, she is co-author, with Neil Morgan, of "Dr. Seuss & Mr. Geisel," selected by The New York Times as a Notable Book of 1995, and of "Roger," a biography of the oceanographer Roger Revelle, published in 1996 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego.

"California," a book of essays she wrote with photographer DeWitt Jones in 1989, received a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation. In 1974, the Morgans collaborated on "Island in the Coast: Sea Ranch, California" (Oceanic Design, San Francisco.)

A lifelong traveler and ever-curious about the world, Judith Morgan has written articles for many magazines, including National Geographic, Travel & Leisure, Saturday Review, Readers' Digest, Harper's Bazaar, Sports Illustrated and San Diego Magazine. She is a regular contributor to San Diego Magazine. She has served as interviewer and editor for oral histories through the University of California, Berkeley.

She grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma in a family of journalists. After graduating with honors from the University of Montana in 1960, she studied in Argentina as a fellow of the Inter-American Press Association. She was a reporter on The Tulsa World before joining the staff of The San Diego Union in 1963.

She lives in La Jolla, California and serves on as a trustee of the University of California, San Diego, Foundation. Judith and Neil Morgan are joint recipients of the Ellen & Roger Revelle Award for community leadership and the UCSan Diego Chancellor's Associates Medal. Judith was named a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Montana in 2008.
